Transferring the 872nd BS (VH) to Kearney AAF

Special Order 239, Par 43, Hq, AAFld, Harvard, Nebr, 27 Aug 1945

The following is a retyping of part (paragraph 43 and attachment) of Special Order 239, directing the movement of twelve B-29 aircrews (plus five passengers each), comprising the 872nd Bombardment Squadron (VH) Flight Echelon, 382nd Bombardment Group (VH), from Harvard AAFld (Harvard, Nebraska) to Kearney AAFld (Kearney, Nebraska). This special order represents the last recorded movement of this squadron as a unit in the archived history and records of the 382nd BG(VH). It is further believed (by the transcriber) that the unit was subsequently disbanded after this movement, with members disbursed from Kearney AAFld, as peace had been agreed to and the war ending, with the Air Echelon never being sent overseas.

The pages of this record are from AFHRA Microfilm Roll B0372, Frames 1708 through 1712. The archived pages are sometimes faint and hard to read, so transcription errors are likely (most are marked with a question mark and will be fixed when opportunities arise). This Special Order is important because it is the closest thing available (although incomplete) to a roster of enlisted personnel for the air echelon of the 872nd BS(VH), as both air crew members, and a number of air support personnel as passengers, were covered by this movement order. (A separate complete officers roster for the air echelon is available separately for the squadron in the group records.) Complete unit rosters of the 872nd BS(VH), enlisted personnel included, do not separately exist in currently known archives (unless personally held by someone yet unknown), as all AAF unit rosters from 1944, 1945, and 1946 were lost in the fire of 1973 at the National Military Personnel Center in St. Louis. Only rosters of officers were provided in the archived record of the 382nd BG(VH) and its squadrons.
