By the end of July missions, the following pilots seem to be often flying the same airplanes over and over: 480 Lt. Newlon (7) 484 Lt. Dellinger (6) 486 Lt. Zimmerman (6) 511 Lt. Eastburn (5) 573 Lt. Shields (4) (Either they liked the plane, it was "their" plane, or the Operations Officer has a sense of humor. For the other planes, it is too hard to tell if a pilot had that plane as a favorite or was assigned regularly to the aircraft by Operations.) Notes: - The 100th BS did not fly missions for the remainder of July after the 7th. - No missions are reported for August, as the squadron was on rest leave and transfering stations - Mission reports in September did not list the detail of planes or pilots, and by the end of September all the H models were off the station and returned to the depot, with not a single H model listed for a mission in October, those missions being flown entirely by new J models and a few D models still kicking around. - On September 3, Capt. Wolfendale had to land "513" (43-4513) at Talasea airstrip, an emergency landing strip on West New Britain, due to engine trouble while on a three-plane shipping sweep. The plane remains abandoned there, its nose wheel collapsed and unable to be flown away due to the shortness of the strip. Here are two webpages with pictures of this wreck: http://www.tourismwestnewbritain.org.pg/wrecksinthejungle.htm http://www.pacificwrecks.com/walkabout/2001/index.html - On September 8, "484" (43-4484) was involved in an accident after landing, being struck by "611". Killed in this accident was Lt. Dellinger and two others. I presume both planes were damaged. - An additional B-25H known to be with the 100th, 43-4498, named "Dutch" by Lt. Robertson after the nickname of his wife, must have arrived on station in late July or August, and would have flown on missions in early September. A picture of Dutch can be found here, taken by its namer: http://helios.augustana.edu/~kla/pics/dutch_roy2.jpg [Photo courtesy of Lt. Robertson's son, Donald C. Robertson, Jr.; also shown in the photograph is navigator Lt. James Schaade (in coveralls) and co-pilot Lt. Roy Anderson (in white T-shirt).] Last Updated 10 September 2006
